Glossary of Terms used in Hawick High School - For Parent Information Acc 1-3 Access 1, 2 and 3 - National Qualification Exams. Access 3 is equivalent to an SCQF Level 3 or a Foundation Standard Grade. Pupils with Additional Needs may manage qualifications at Access 1 & 2. These qualifications do not have final “exams”.
Adv H (AH) Advanced Higher – A sixth-year qualification. Involves independent learning – good preparation for University.
AifL Assessment is for Learning – strategies for using assessment to support pupils’ learning rather than just recording results (also known as “formative assessment”).
CfE Curriculum for Excellence – Government’s new Curriculum for Scottish Education.
CLA Copyright Licensing Agency – Schools have to comply with rules set by this agency.
CLD Community Learning Development. Involved in local communities to provide educational opportunities beyond schools to all ages but also work to support schools.
CPD Continuous Professional Development – all teachers must undertake 35 additional hours per session.
CT Classroom Teacher
DHTs Depute Headteachers: responsibilities include CfE development and implementation, subject department overviews, pupil support and Year Group leadership.
ESOL English for Speakers of Other Languages - 4 Capacities CfE Outcomes for Children in Hawick High School: Basis of School’s Aims for children to become: successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and respectable citizens.
FE Further Education
FTE Full Time Equivalent – mainly used when talking about staffing (e.g. teacher numbers in schools) e.g. 1FTE is one full-time teacher, 0.2 FTE is a teacher who works one day a week.
H Higher – the main “benchmark” qualification for Scottish Universities – students mainly sit in S5.

HND/HNC Higher National Diploma/Higher National Certificate – College-based Certificates – Many pupils from Hawick HS will progress towards these via Borders College.
HSLW Home School Link Worker – Person attached to the school who works collaboratively supporting parents and pupils. This post will move to the “Locality”.
IAF Integrated Assessment Framework – a new system for working with pupils requiring additional needs and supports from outside agencies.
ICS Integrated Children’s Services - interagency working for children with additional needs in Scottish Borders Council. Teams of professionals and support workers, including school staff, will be based in 5 Localities across Scottish Borders.
IiP Investors in People – Scottish Borders Council award granted to all schools in Council, including Hawick HS.
Int 1 Intermediate 1 – National Qualification at SCQF Level 4 or Standard Grade
General – mainly sat by pupils in S4 or pupils in S5 progressing towards Highers. CfE will bring in a new Qualification called “National 4”.
Int 2 Intermediate 2 - National Qualification at Level 4 or Standard Grade Credit – mainly sat by pupils in S4 or pupils in S5 progressing towards Highers. CfE will bring in a new Qualification called “National 5” to replace this in future years.
JAAT Joint Agency Action Team – The group of people, including Police, Health, Social Work and school pastoral staff who meet weekly to discuss pupils with specific issues. These meetings also take place across “Localities” every month with more senior staff.
LEAPS Lothian Equal Access Programme for Schools – a scheme that works with the school to help increase participation and success at HE for our pupils.
Locality Team The ‘local team - Teviotdale’ whom HHS can refer to and access for social work or extra and additional needs support.
LTS Learning and Teaching Scotland – key curriculum organisation supporting Scottish Schools to deliver improved teaching and learning and CfE.
MCMC (MC2) More Choices, More Chances – opportunities offered by schools and colleges for NEET pupils to improve life chances (see NEET).
NABs National Assessment Bank – items of assessment used to test pupils/ students progressing through NQ Courses at all levels. Passing such internal tests leads to Unit Qualifications.
NC National Certificate – recognised by SQA e.g. Access 3, Intermediate 1-2 Courses and qualifications.
NEET Not in Employment, Education or Training – a group of most challenging pupils that additional support can be targeted towards to ensure successful transition to positive destinations.
NQ National Qualifications – the set of qualifications including Access, Intermediates, Higher and Advanced Higher.
PIP Pupil Intervention Programme – small group that runs to help support pupils with attendance problems. Organised by CLD workers and School staff working in partnership.
PS SMT Pupil Support Senior Management Team: Schools Senior Managers and PTs Pupil Support with the PT Additional Needs. Meet weekly to discuss needs of pupils with Additional Needs.

PT PS Principal Teachers of Pupil Support – the most senior Principal Teachers of Pastoral Support Care.
QIO Quality Improvement Officer: Employed by SBC to support and challenge school improvement agendas in SBC Schools. Hold termly meetings with Headteachers and organise School Reviews, as well as assist HMIe in preliminary reports and evaluations.
Rector Hawick High School’s Headteacher – also well-known locally as “The Peche”!!!
RLG Regional Liaison Group – an education based group who meet at Council HQ and discuss very specific referrals from cross region schools and offer support mechanisms.
SBC Scottish Borders Council
“Schools Plus” College-based Courses for pupils in S4 in Hawick HS. Undertaken on day or ½ day release and vocational in nature. Courses often offer “Skills for Work” Qualifications.
SCOTXED Scottish Government organisation who produce statistical data on schools.
SCQF Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework – a structure that sets out to ensure progression through the various National Qualifications in Scotland and help benchmark levels across sectors.
SDS Skills Development Scotland – formerly known as Careers Scotland.
SEB Scottish Enterprise Borders
SEEMIS School’s Management and Information System: holds all pupil data. Used by teaching staff to record absence and track pupil attainment and achievement and by Pastoral Care Staff to store notes and records.
SfA School of Ambition – Hawick HS has this status with funding from 2005-08
SFC Scottish Funding Council – funds University and Colleges
SMT School Management Team: Rector, Depute Rector and two Depute Headteachers (supported and working collaboratively in partnership with PSSMT and Curriculum PTs).

TCS Transforming Children’s Services – a review, rationalisation and re-organisation of Scottish Borders Schools and Children’s Services, leading to major efficiencies to services from 2008 onwards.
